National Work Zone Awareness Week (NWZAW) is an annual event promoting work zone safety across the country. Led by the American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA) in conjunction with state and federal agencies, the event encourages drivers to slow down, stay focused, and use extra caution approaching and passing through a roadway work zone. This year's theme is "Respect the zone, so we all get home. Actions behind the wheel can last forever." In 2022, 891 people died in work zones and 94 highway worker occupational fatalities occurred in road construction sites (see National Work Zone Safety Information Clearinghouse - https://workzonesafety.org/). OSHA, through its longstanding Roadway Work Zone Safety and Health Partners National Alliance, supports the event and encourages participation in the activities scheduled for each day of the week - https://www.nwzaw.org/participate.html. For more information, visit nwzaw.org. A promotion guide ( https://www.nwzaw.org/uploads/6/7/1/0/67107387/nwzaw2025_eventpromotionguide.pdf ), planning guide ( https://www.nwzaw.org/uploads/6/7/1/0/67107387/nwzaw2025_eventplanningguide.pdf ), and poster ( https://www.nwzaw.org/uploads/6/7/1/0/67107387/nwzaw2025poster_18x24inch.pdf ) are available for outreach purposes.

The National Stand-Down to Prevent Struck-By Incidents ( https://www.cpwr.com/research/research-to-practice-r2p/r2p-library/other-resources-for-stakeholders/struck-by-hazards/ ) is held annually during NWZAW to raise awareness of struck-by hazards, which may include falling and flying objects, vehicles and heavy equipment, and crane swing hazards. These incidents are the number one cause of nonfatal injuries in construction and the leading cause of death among heavy and civil construction workers. Sponsored by the American Road and Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) and CPWR-The Center for Construction Research and Training (CPWR) with support from the National Occupational Research Agenda (NORA) Construction Sector Council ( https://www.cdc.gov/nora/councils/const/default.html ), including OSHA, this event encourages workplaces to take a break to focus on struck-by hazards and reinforce the importance of training and prevention. On Monday, April 21 @ 2:30 pm ET CPWR will host The National Stand Down to Prevent Struck-By Incidents Webinar: Work Zone Technologies Webinar (register here https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_R14buU5XSWWOeL8s1UZHTg#/registration ). Outreach, educational and stand-down materials are available here ( https://www.cpwr.com/research/research-to-practice-r2p/r2p-library/other-resources-for-stakeholders/struck-by-hazards/ ), and include infographics, toolbox talks, recordings of the 2024 events and other past webinars.
